Xixili

Xixili

This statue, created by the sculptor Jose Luis Butron in 1980, stands on the breakwater which ends in the red lamp under Lamiaran, the Lamerapunte breakwater. Xixili’s torso, arms and head are that of a woman whilst the rest is a fish, with feet of a duck. Xixili is mounted on a pedestal which represents the heads of three, open-mouthed fishermen, drowning in the sea. The statue recalls the legend of the Lamiñak, or evil fairies, from Lamiaren who were said to go down to the rocks at Lamerapunte to attract the fishermen by making them fall in love. Once the fishermen had fallen into the arms of the Lamiñak, they would be taken to Ogoño and be drowned.
