At the height of Bermeo’s splendour in the 14th century, defensive walls were built around the town. There were seven gates, of which this is the sole survivor. Its structure and width are particularly noteworthy.
This is all that remains of the seven gates through the town walls. It dates from the 14th century and comprises a pointed exterior arch and a lower interior arch. Between the two the gap through which the portcullis was lowered can still be seen, as can the supports for the hinges that held the gates and the recesses for the bolts used to lock them.
