CONVENT OF SAN FRANCISCO (CLOISTERS)

SAN FRANTZISKO KOMENTUA

Mass is held daily at 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., and on Sundays and public holidays at 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., noon, 1:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.

It is open to the public from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and from 6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The complex comprises the church itself, the cloister and a residential area. It stands outside the perimeter of where the city walls once stood, next to what was originally known as the “Ironworkers Gate”, though it later came to be known as the “Convent Gate”, which link to the town with the area where its ironworks and shipyards were located. It was dedicated by Count Tello and his wife Juana de Lara, the Lord and Lady of Bizkaia, on 30 January 1357. In 1928 the municipal market was transferred to the cloister, where it continued to be held until restoration work was undertaken in 1994. The present church dates from the 16th century and is built in the variant of Gothic known locally as the “Catholic Monarchs” style.
