The fountain was constructed during the reign of the Emperor Charles I, in the 16th Century. Although considerably deteriorated, the coat of arms of the Chartered Town of Bermeo, the imperial, and that of the Feudal Estate of Vizcaya can be seen to crown the top. The fountain featured two outlets, delivering water of excellent quality which was used by the townspeople and by the fishing and merchant boats alike.
