On the old harbour front in Bermeo stands the historical Ercilla tower house, which enjoys national monument status. Since 1948 it has housed the Fishermen’s Museum, one of the few museums anywhere in the world that is devoted entirely to the work, techniques, lives and working environment of fishermen. The exhibits featured include descriptions of the coastline and the fishing ports of the Basque Country, of the lives and customs of local fishermen and their guilds, and of the vessels and gear with which they have fished and sailed throughout history.
